Consistency Is Key
Many educational psychologists have uncovered how children, who live consistently without routine, have a greater chance of experiencing ongoing anxiety, which impacts the ability to regulate emotions.
Furthermore, inconsistency within the home can also have a widely negative effect on children both physically and mentally due to the high levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) released in children. This in part is due to the brain adapting to unpredictability and anticipating what could happen next.
Consistency allows boundaries and expectations to be set, which actually provide children with a sense of security. Structures and routines also help children learn how to control their behaviours. The importance of this is paramount. This may explain why some children behave well at school (as a result of the established structure and routine) but push the boundaries at home.
